Disney World Plans Expansion: As much as $2 billion is to be spent on a new theme park in an effort to reverse an attendance slump that began in 1990, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Annual visitors to the central Florida tourist destination have declined by almost 5 million to 28.9 million this year from a peak of 33.7 million four years ago, the newspaper said. Some argue that the parks are too expensive, but executives blamed the downturn on a sluggish European economy, uncertainty over the U.S. economy and crimes against tourists in Florida. The expansion is to include an animal theme attraction with wild animals from Asia and Africa, a third water park, a convention center, a cruise ship line and three hotels by the end of the decade.
