One crew member died but all 28 others aboard a burning Cypriot coal ship adrift about 200 miles south of Nantucket have been plucked to safety, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday.

Coast Guard officials said four crew members who had remained on board the Greek-owned bulk carrier Polydora to fight the blaze abandoned ship early Monday and were rescued by a Coast Guard cutter.

A Coast Guard spokesman said the fire was still raging in the ship’s cabins, but was not believed to have spread to the engine room or cargo area of the vessel, which is loaded with coal. The ship was not sinking, he said.
