Child Abuse

I want to commend The Times for calling the public’s attention to one of the most tragic occurrences in our society, child abuse. The Nov. 9 article points out that child abuse is on the rise. This horrifying problem not only robs our children of their youth--and the possibility of life--but perpetuates violence in the future. Studies show abused children are more likely to be involved in violent crimes and batter their own children, continuing the cycle of violence.

Recognizing the impact of child abuse on society, the Junior League of Los Angeles made violence prevention one of its focus areas. Not only does the league endorse and support legislation stiffening the penalties for child abuse, it has developed a project to combat child abuse in our community. Our project--Building Blocks--pairs experienced mothers with at-risk families. Trained volunteers offer new mothers tips on stress management and child development, and help families access social services. With the support of our co-sponsor, Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, the program is expanding to include parent-education classes acclimating new mothers to the child development process.

The league welcomes collaboration with social service agencies and other community organizations in the fight against child abuse. By joining forces, we can halt this tragedy and improve our future.
