The Postal Service, in a hasty about-face, said Wednesday it will issue a “Madonna and Child” Christmas stamp next year after all.

The agency stirred a tempest last week when it announced plans to end the tradition, which dates to the mid-1960s.

The decision to end the tradition ignited a controversy among religious groups, President Clinton, members of Congress and philatelists. But Americans United for Separation of Church and State had applauded the move.
