President Clinton granted a traditional White House Thanksgiving pardon to a frisky 50-pound turkey on Wednesday, then joined his wife in serving a turkey meal at a soup kitchen.

The Clintons, wearing bright green aprons, helped dish out a midday dinner to nearly 150 people at the So Others Might Eat kitchen in northeast Washington.

The President put heaping portions of cranberry sauce on the plates; First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton added rolls. They both then moved from table to table, chatting with diners.

“I think that this is an important time for all of us to think about the larger American community of which we are a part,” Clinton said earlier.

Earlier, the President presided over what has been an annual tradition at the White House since 1947: a ceremony for a turkey not destined to end up on a dinner plate.

The gift turkey was a 32-week-old snow white male raised by Shawn Arbogast, 9, of Harrisonburg, Va. The President received it on behalf of the U.S. government. It was then sent to live at a park.
