A car bomb explosion that blew off the legs of a prominent Dutch artist may have been a case of mistaken identity, a national newspaper reported Friday.

Dutch Television reported Friday night that an arrest had been made in the case, but no further details were immediately available.

Rob Scholte, one of the country’s most successful contemporary artists, was seriously injured when a hand grenade exploded in his car shortly after he started it Thursday. He was listed in stable condition at the city’s Free University Hospital.

The Rotterdam daily NRC Handelsblad said the car bomb was likely meant for an Amsterdam lawyer who had recently received several death threats. The NRC, the nation’s newspaper of record, did not cite its sources.
