‘Wayne’s World 2’

This 1993 release is just as hilarious as the 1992 original, which was one of the most distinctive American comedies in years. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey (left) return as those two Aurora, Ill., youths who host a goofy late-night cable-access TV show. They’re a couple of small-town guys who like to think of themselves as being incredibly hip yet possess considerable naivete. A year has passed since Myers’ cocky Wayne and Carvey’s somewhat dim Garth have resisted selling out their show for big bucks, and they’re at loose ends when Wayne hits upon staging a huge concert--”Waynestock.” Along with such bands as Aerosmith, Pearl Jam and Van Halen, Wayne wants his gorgeous girlfriend (Tia Carrere) to appear, but a suave record producer (Christopher Walken) wants to whisk her out to the West Coast for reasons Wayne suspects are not entirely professional. With a hilarious turn by Kim Basinger (pictured) as Garth’s date (HBO, Saturday at 8 p.m.).
