Ford in Talks With Mazda: Ford Motor Co. said that talks with Mazda Motor Corp. are in “an advanced stage” for the production by Ford of a car for Mazda based on an existing Ford model. A U.S.-based Ford spokesman said he agreed with the general outlines of a report appearing in London’s Sunday Times, but he emphasized that no agreement had been reached. The newspaper quoted industry sources as saying plants in Britain, Germany and Spain were candidates to build the Ford Fiesta-based, Mazda-badged car. The Sunday Times story quoted Henry Wallace, an executive of both Ford and Mazda, as saying that such a deal should be announced “within the next two to three weeks.” Ford owns a stake of about 25% in Mazda.
