World IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : IRA Talks Still Planned This Year

London said it will open direct talks with Sinn Fein, the Irish Republican Army’s political wing, this year as planned, despite delays to Northern Ireland’s peace process. The fall of Ireland’s government two weeks ago has upset the timetable for the fragile peace process and left Britain, less eager than Ireland to move ahead, in charge. But Michael Ancram, junior minister responsible for the province, said talks with Sinn Fein and Protestant paramilitary groups will start by the end of the year.
