The UCLA soccer team scored three goals in the last eight minutes to defeat Southern Methodist, 4-2, in the second round of the NCAA playoffs Sunday at SMU.

After scoring early, the Bruins found themselves trailing the Mustangs, 2-1, with 10 minutes to play.

“They (SMU) were up, 2-1, and already looking to milk the clock a little bit,” said UCLA Coach Sigi Schmid.

“When you’re down, 2-1, with 10 minutes to go you’re not exactly in a euphoric state, but we began to play more aggressively and won the majority of the challenges.”

The Bruins (17-4) got second-half goals from Frankie Hejduk, Greg Vanney and Ante Razov. Andy Frye scored their opening goal.

The Mustangs (15-4-1) were unable to answer the Bruin rally due in large part to goalkeeper Chris Snitko, who had five saves and made a crucial stop to protect the lead with 2:14 to play.

UCLA will play host to the College of Charleston (19-6) in the quarterfinals next weekend.

CS Fullerton 1, San Francisco 0--Mike Tran executed an overhead scissors kick that Matt Bradbury headed into the goal, giving the Titans the victory before 2,651 at Titan Stadium.

“It was the kind of shot that you’d say you would give him a million bucks if he could do it again, and he never would,” said San Francisco Coach Stephen Negoesco. “But it was a good goal.”

Tran said it was all reaction.

“You get lucky sometimes, and in that case I got very lucky,” he said.

The Titans (14-6-2) will meet Indiana in the quarterfinals.
