One person was killed in Bombay and about 100 arrested in this western town where 114 people died earlier this month in a stampede, as police tried to enforce a ban on a statewide general strike Monday.

The strikers were demanding the resignation of the Maharashtra state government for allowing police to charge a tribal demonstration Nov. 23, allegedly causing protesters to stampede.

Adivasis, members of India’s many small tribes fighting for affirmative action programs, were demanding some of the guaranteed jobs and school slots other ethnic groups receive.

A truck driver died and three people were injured in Bombay, the state’s largest city, when protesters stoned a train, a bus and trucks, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Burning tires thrown by demonstrators also set fire to a train, two cars and a rickshaw there, but firefighters quickly put out the blazes.

In Nagpur, the state’s winter capital, opposition leaders and about 60 supporters were detained when they tried to prevent a state official from entering the legislature.

Elsewhere in the city, about 40 people were arrested trying to stone buses or block legislators from leaving their hotel. No injuries were reported.
