The Press : Penning Opinions of a Troubled Mission
In the Bosnian conflict, a war that defies diplomatic solutions and continues a bloody path that has taken an estimated 200,000 lives, the world’s editorial cartoonists have found little but despair. In recent days the target of their pens has been the U.N. peacekeeping force, which, with its civilian leaders, has been needled for its apparent ineffectiveness.
Monday, Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic complained to the Western powers and Russia that “nothing is being undertaken” to suppress the Serbian assault on the Muslim safe zone of Bihac.
“The whole international community, embodied in the United Nations and the mighty NATO pact, cannot save one endangered city,” he complained.
