Bored With Law School

I have never experienced as visceral a response to a commentary as I did to Cameron Kenny’s “Hey, Have You Heard the One About the Lawyer?” (Nov. 24). Although Kenny has been privileged with great opportunities, the only thing she seems to be thankful for is the freedom to express sour grapes.

In case anyone needs to be reminded, many talented people have attended and enjoyed law school, and then gone on to become productive members of the legal profession and the community. Although lawyer-bashing has become all too prevalent, it is worth noting that many of the most prominent and gifted members of our society have been lawyers. These individuals have led our country, served the poor, battled for the defenseless and have tried to protect our civil liberties, many of which remain threatened today.

I would have hoped that Kenny would not have so quickly forgotten the plight of the women who preceded her, having valiantly battled for the rights she now enjoys. Moreover, at a time when many worthy students are denied the opportunity to receive higher education and student loans are at a premium, I regret that such valuable resources appear to have been wasted on Kenny.

The message from Kenny’s commentary is not about law school or lawyering, it is about taking responsibility for one’s actions and being grateful for the opportunity to freely pursue one’s goals. After all, many lawyers have given of themselves to ensure these freedoms.

Small wonder with a reason no more compelling than boredom that Kenny found law school disappointing. Lacking purpose and direction seldom yields a different result.

After being physically assaulted stopping an ongoing child abuse, I was appalled at the lack of recourse available to similar victims. Wanting to make a difference, I chose law school.

Now in my second year at Western State Law School, law still fascinates me. I clerk exclusively for Senior Deputy Dist. Atty. Dennis Bauer, one of our country’s top DNA prosecutors at the Santa Ana DA’s office. Interactions with our county’s best line against crime and world-renowned FBI forensic experts exceed my expectations.

The law deals with factual reality; fine-tuning one’s ability to present each side in the best possible light.

I wish her success as a comedy writer for the selfish reason that it would be a travesty and great disservice to the general public, the very people she should have gone to law school to help, for her to represent anyone in any capacity.
