World IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : Journalist Resigns in KGB Spy Uproar
A media storm over the resignation of a top left-wing British journalist accused of spying for the former Soviet Union deepened as editors called for publication of a full list of former KGB agents. Richard Gott, literary editor of the Guardian newspaper, said in a published letter it was “culpable stupidity” for him to have kept his contacts with the Soviets secret, and he admitted accepting paid trips abroad during the 1960s. But Gott, 56, denied allegations by the conservative Spectator magazine that he was paid $935 by a KGB agent and also suggested names of other journalist recruits.
