World IN BRIEF : RWANDA : Massacre Witnesses Slain, Official Says
Witnesses of genocide attacks on minority Tutsis in Rwanda are being singled out for execution by extremist Hutus in refugee camps in southwest Rwanda, a U.N. spokesman said in Kigali, the capital. Capt. Stephane Grenier said violence had increased in the camps in that area. “People have been killed with machetes and in grenade attacks,” he added. U.N. officials said the slayings appeared to be the work of gangs from the former Rwandan army, which was ousted by the Rwandan Patriotic Front in July, and members of the Hutu militia known as the Interahamwe who were responsible for the attacks on Tutsis.
