BLOEMFONTEIN : ANC Taking Stock

Led by President Nelson Mandela, about 3,000 delegates from South Africa’s ruling African National Congress, the black liberation movement-turned-political party, will meet Saturday through Wednesday to discuss how far they have come and the challenges that lie ahead in their country.
The 49th national conference will take place in Bloemfontein, where the ANC was founded in 1912. The city, capital of the old Orange Free State, later became a stronghold of the right-wing white Afrikaners who institutionalized racial segregation under apartheid.
The theme of the conference will be “From Resistance to Reconstruction and Nation-Building.”
Despite reports of a leadership struggle, Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to win easy reelection as secretary general.
