MISSION VIEJO : Planners Take No Stand on Apartment Complex

Share

The Mission Viejo Co.’s proposal to build an 850-unit apartment complex failed to win a recommendation this week from planning commissioners, who said they needed more information on the impact of noise from Marine jets passing over the site.

Although commissioners said they like the project, a recommendation against it in September by the county Airport Land Use Commission worried them. The Planning Commission sent the proposal on to the City Council along with a statement but without a recommendation for or against.

“The Planning Commission favors the residential concept; however, it’s deeply concerned with the liability issue in view of the Airport Land Use Commission denial of the project,” read the commission’s statement.

The apartment complex would be built on about 50 acres just east of El Toro Road at the city’s northern border.

City Development Director Clint Sherrod had asked the commission to delay a decision to July 3 to allow time for monitoring of noise levels. But the Mission Viejo Co. asked the commission to make an immediate decision.

Working shorthanded with the absence of Commissioner Tim Watson and the election of former Commissioner Sherri M. Butterfield to the City Council, the commission declined.

The proposal is scheduled to go before the City Council on Jan. 9.
