Alaska Oil Export Ban Challenged: Energy Secretary Hazel O’Leary said she will push to repeal the law against exporting oil from Alaska’s North Slope. She said she saw broad support for the idea late in the last Congress, but Alaska’s delegation was unable to win repeal. President Clinton has also indicated support for lifting the ban. Energy Department research concluded that exporting the oil would generate jobs and revenue, but some West Coast lawmakers say gasoline prices could soar with less Alaskan oil going to domestic ports.
