World IN BRIEF : TURKEY : 19 Civilians Die in Raid by Rebel Kurds
Rebel Kurds killed 19 people, mostly women and children, in a raid on a village in southeast Turkey, officials said. They said the guerrillas, who raided Hamzali village in Diyarbakir province Sunday night, killed eight women, seven children and four men. Six others were wounded. The rebels of the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) abducted three men as they fled in the dark. Hamzali is one of the villages in southeast Turkey that refuses to support the rebels and provides men to serve as village guards paid by the government.
