Aeroflot to Increase Its Flight Range: The Russian international carrier plans to buy foreign-built engines for 14 of its Ilyushin Il-86 four-engine airliners in order to increase their range, a senior airline official said. Aeroflot technical director Gennady Anikayev said the airline will replace inefficient Russian engines with those made by the CFM consortium, a joint venture of General Electric Co. and France’s SNECMA. The Il-86, which can carry about 350 passengers, is widely regarded as one of the most successful Russian-built airliners, but it has been hampered by an inability to fly long distances.
