BALDWIN HILLS : Magic Johnson, Sony to Build 12-Screen Theater

Share

Magic Johnson is making a fast break into the entertainment industry with a new 12-screen theater that one of his companies, Johnson Development Corp., is building in a partnership with Sony Theatres.

The former Los Angeles Lakers player, joined by Mayor Richard Riordan, members of the City Council and Sony executives, took a ceremonial turn at the shovel Thursday during groundbreaking for the project next to the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.

Called the Magic Johnson Theatre, it is scheduled to open in May. It is the first link in what investors hope will be a nationwide chain of 10 or more movie theaters serving minority neighborhoods. The partners are considering an additional location in Los Angeles and are looking for sites in New York, Chicago and Atlanta, Johnson said.
