Countywide : Donors Asked to Offset Low Blood Supply

Share

To avert potentially dangerous shortages, the Red Cross is making an urgent appeal to residents to donate blood.

Recent storms have reduced the number of donations and unless the local blood supply is augmented with new donations, elective surgeries may have to be postponed, said Judy Iannaccone, spokeswoman for the local Red Cross chapter.

Blood types most needed are Group O and Group B, which together are found in more than half the population.

Group O blood is prevalent among Latinos and Group B is common among African-Americans and Asian-Americans.

Donors must be at least 17, weigh more than 110 pounds, in good health, she said.

People can make appointments by calling (800) GIVE-LIFE.
