Anaheim Seat Must Be Filled Promptly

Share

Your (editorial) on the Anaheim City Council vacancy, “Not a Time to Waste Money” (Dec. 25), was greatly appreciated. I had submitted a similar opinion to the Anaheim council on Nov. 17.

At two council meetings since then, I have observed an overwhelming consensus of opinion from citizens that support your (and my) view. Those opposed were for the most part disgruntled losers either for council positions or the mayor’s job.

Your “perspective” was on the money.

* As a concerned Anaheim resident, I have taken the position that a special election should be held to select a new City Council person. The basis of my position was sound. The third-place candidate was third in all elections where the voter was only allowed to vote on two positions. I felt that in order to present the best talent to the voter, a special election was necessary.

I have, however, changed my position. The crisis at hand does not give us the time for proper selection. We simply cannot afford to “waste” money or more importantly--time. I also don’t feel that we should have a “knee jerk” appointment as a solution.

There is an experienced candidate available who has weathered many crises. He has the insight and talent to help immediately. This person needs no adjustment period and would be immediately productive. I suggest that the council see if recently retired Councilman Bob Simson would fill the empty seat, if only on an interim basis. Even if it was decided that a special election was necessary, this would allow the council to get on with the business at hand.
