Weight-Loss Settlement Proposed: Three makers of clip-on weight-loss devices have tentatively agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they made false claims about their products. The proposed settlement announced this week would require the companies to support future claims with scientific evidence. The FTC will decide whether to finalize the agreement after 60 days. The companies--Ninzu Inc., Davish Merchandising Inc. and Order by Phone Inc.--said the devices, which are clipped to the ear and worn before meals, work through acupressure. The devices are named the Ninzu, the Auricle Clip and B-Trim. Company ads claimed that use of the devices led to significant weight loss through appetite control and that scientific evidence supported these claims, the FTC said. The FTC said the claims were false and unsubstantiated.
