MASERU : A King Returns
Lesotho’s King Moshoeshoe II, deposed four years ago by the military leaders of the tiny African country, will be restored to his throne Wednesday after the abdication of his son, Letsie III.
Reinstating one of Africa’s three sovereign kings is expected to bring stability to the country of 1.8 million people, entirely landlocked by South Africa, after years of military-dominated politics.
Claiming widespread dissatisfaction in the kingdom, Letsie tried to depose the elected government last August and appoint his own ruling council in Maseru, the capital. But pressure from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana forced him to back down.
