SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Edison junior forward Marie Philman scored 25 points, including the game-winning basket in overtime, and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Chargers to a 50-48 Sunset League victory over visiting Esperanza Thursday night.

Philman, who was held scoreless the last 13 minutes of the second half as Esperanza rallied from an 11-point deficit, came through in crunch time. She scored both Edison baskets in overtime, including the game-winning driving layup with 12 seconds left.

“I can’t believe I came back to this after seven years,” said Edison Coach Dave White, whose team beat the Aztecs for the second time this month. White, who stepped down from the girls’ basketball post in 1987 to concentrate on his duties as Edison football coach, returned this season. His Chargers (15-4, 4-2) are ranked sixth in Orange County and tied with Marina for second place in the Sunset League.

Edison led at halftime, 28-21, and built the lead to 34-23 with 5:50 left in the third quarter. Esperanza chipped away at the lead, tying the score, 38-38, on a basket by Lyndsay Brown with 5:36 left.

The ninth-ranked Aztecs (15-6, 3-3) trailed, 46-43, in the closing seconds of regulation. After Heidi Hill missed a three-pointer with 10 seconds left, sophomore Monique Toney chased down the rebound in the backcourt, dribbled up to the three-point line, took a deep breath, and sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

With her 12 rebounds Thursday, Philman upped her career total to a school-record 799, passing Shannon Meyer, who had 798 rebounds from 1978 to 1981. Philman needs only four points to break Meyer’s school career scoring record, and could get that record Tuesday when the Chargers travel to league leader Fountain Valley.

Lindsay Foss led Esperanza with 13 points. Brown added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Aztecs.
