World IN BRIEF : BRAZIL : 6 Killed, 20 Trapped in Building Collapse
A six-story apartment building collapsed in a southern resort town, killing at least six people and leaving as many as 20 trapped in rubble. “We can hear the screams of many people, including a group of small children that was playing under the building when it collapsed,” a police spokesman said. The building in Guaratuba, 500 miles south of Rio de Janeiro, collapsed at 10:30 a.m. The spokesman said a construction crew was working in the building at the time to reinforce the structure after residents had reported several cracks in the concrete base.
