LOS ANGELES : City Council Outlaws Smoking in LAX Bars
The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday banned smoking in Los Angeles International Airport bars, closing the last refuge for travelers who want to light up.
In a unanimous vote, the council passed an ordinance enacting into law a no smoking policy the Airport Commission adopted last year.
Indoor smoking at LAX will be allowed only at a designated area in a Tom Bradley International Terminal lounge for passengers on stopovers.
In 1993, the commission barred smoking in all terminal areas except for designated places in bars. But the panel expanded the ban after tavern operators complained that smokers were clogging their doors.
In December, 1994, LAX was listed in a national study of airport smoking policies as one of the nation’s five healthiest commercial airfields for travelers. The others were Minneapolis / St. Paul, Dallas / Ft. Worth, Miami and Seattle-Tacoma.
