TELE-WHO? Remember how county government was gung-ho about telecommuting? Officials planned to set up computer centers to save people driving to work: It would reduce traffic and save office space. Guess who was among those axed in the recent bond-related layoffs: Wayne Snyder, its telecommuting director. . . . Snyder has decided to start his own telecommuting consulting firm. “We still care about telecommuting,” a county spokesman says about the dilemma, “but frankly, everything’s up in the air right now.”

IT’S THE LAW: State Supt. of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin, in a visit here Friday (B3), unequivocally says the county’s bankruptcy will not result in any school closures. . . . She insists the state Constitution won’t allow public schools to close for lack of money. Adds Eastin: “The children are not going to pay in Orange County, and I will fight with you to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

SCULPTING CLASS: A few years ago when Wendee Hagen of Santa Ana saw female bodybuilders on TV, it struck her as a good chance to combine two of her interests: modeling and staying in shape. Her strenuous gym work has paid off. . . . Hagen has made her way to the Ms. Fitness USA finals at Knott’s Berry Farm this weekend. Hagen, 24, calls it “sculpting your body,” and adds: “No matter where I finish, I know I’ve improved myself, both mentally and physically.”

U.S.S. FRIEND: Even Robert K. Dornan’s critics--and the Republican congressman from Garden Grove has no shortage of them--admit his fierce loyalty to other party conservatives. It was Dornan who got more than 100 of his House colleagues to ask the Navy to name a ship after former President Ronald Reagan. . . . This week it happened: The Navy announced its latest Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier will be christened the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan. The huge vessel will take a while to build--it won’t hit the water until 2000.
