VENTURA : Dredging Moves Ahead at Harbor

Share

A dredging vessel that started clearing silt from the mouth of the Ventura Harbor on Sunday is making good progress, a Ventura Port District official said Monday.

“By this Saturday, the entrance will probably be in good shape,” said district General Manager Richard Parsons.

Last month’s storms decreased the harbor entrance’s depth to 16 feet from its usual 30 feet. While the harbor has functioned since then, “it’s a minimum entrance,” Parsons said.

Parsons said the 300-foot-long hopper dredge will be here two to three weeks under a contract with the Army Corps of Engineers.

The dredge will be in operation 24 hours a day and will dump sand off McGrath State Beach several times a day.
