SIMI VALLEY : Grant Awarded for Youth Campground

Share

State officials have awarded a $76,200 grant to help Simi Valley’s park district create a youth campground on 141 acres in a rural section of the city.

The state distributes the federal funds to a range of programs devoted to outdoor activities for young people. Rancho Simi Park District officials said they were overjoyed to win the money for their youth campground project.

“This is an extremely difficult grant to get,” said Rick Johnson, district spokesman. “This amounts to 10% of the funds they gave out. And we’re competing with a lot of the state’s major park districts.”

District officials said the project will include construction of a 50-seat amphitheater, control gates, an access road, parking lot, restrooms and perimeter fencing. The campground will be located in Challenger Park, at the south end of 1st Street in western Simi Valley.

Park officials said facilities will be geared toward youth group and school activities.

The funds will not be available until July, and park improvement dates have not yet been set.
