VILLA PARK : Council Backs County as El Toro Planner

Share

The City Council is officially endorsing the proposal that only Orange County government should be in charge of deciding the use of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station when the military leaves.

The council, at its Jan. 31 meeting, unanimously voted to support pending legislation that would put county government in charge of reuse of the base.

The measure, Assembly Bill 37, was introduced by Assemblyman Curt Pringle (R-Garden Grove). The bill would “designate the county of Orange as the single local reuse entity for the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro.”

The bill is pending action in the Legislature.

Existing state law designates a city-county group called the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority as the official agency in charge of conversion of the Marine base.

That group, however, has been in limbo since county voters on Nov. 8 approved Measure A, a proposition calling for county government to convert the El Toro base into a civilian airport.

The City Council last fall unanimously supported Measure A.
