TURIN, Italy —
An Italian judge who sentenced a man to 24 years in jail for a Mafia murder was unaware of a small hitch that would stop his going to prison: the defendant was dead.

Ceraudo, a member of the feared Calabrian Mafia, was gunned down in a gangland shooting last November--two months before his sentencing Jan. 28 for a 1990 murder.
