Airwaves Auction Enters Final Stretch: Bidding for the rights to offer new wireless services intensified this week in the nation’s biggest-ever auction of the airwaves, as rivals upped the ante for sought-after markets. Total bids have been jumping by $100 million a day, compared to just $20 million a day before the government forced participants to get more aggressive or lose their option to compete for segments of the population they want to serve. Offers for the 99 licenses on the block topped $4.8 billion, according to the latest results from the Federal Communications Commission. The auction began Dec. 5.
