Price of Trade Group Membership Protested: Beijing has repeated its complaint that it is being asked to pay too high a price to join the new World Trade Organization. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Chen Jian said developed countries must “abandon these exorbitant demands, which have gone far beyond China’s current economic status.” The United States and other developed nations want China’s status to reflect the advancing development of its export sector, a status Beijing has resisted.
