Fiscal Discipline

Regarding the article “Board Urged to Stop Paying Retiree Bonuses,” (Feb. 1): I’ll admit I should be used to the way our government bureaucrats spend money. But it’s still hard to understand. I guess we should all know by now that government operates on the premise that if there is money available it must be spent.

In the past three years county retirees received $20.4 million in retirement bonuses, in addition to their regular retirement. This year’s $5.8 million must be paid out of county general funds to pay for this folly.

I hope that Supervisor Frank Schillo will bring some business background and fiscal responsibility where it has been lacking for many years.
