Grant Enables Police to Hire 2 More Officers

Share

The Manhattan Beach Police Department has been authorized to hire two new officers this year using a $150,000 federal grant.

The money is expected under President Clinton’s Cops Fast program, which has allowed 47 Southern California cities to add 59 officers. Cities eligible for the grants had fewer than 50,000 residents. Grants cover up to 75% of the salary and benefits of an officer over three years. The rest must be funded by state or local governments.

If the City Council agrees to fund the remaining salary costs, the 60-officer Manhattan Beach Police Department will hire two additional motorcycle officers by summer, said police Capt. John Hensley. A decision is expected in the next month, he said.
