Share

The City Council will soon create a new citizens’ advisory committee to study police and safety issues and make recommendations to the council.

Mayor Cecilia L. Age announced at the council meeting Monday night that the new panel will be called the Public Safety Committee. The membership size and structure of the committee are yet to be determined.

Councilman Tom Carroll said he expects the committee will be organized in about two months.

Carroll, who was elected Nov. 8, has pushed for creation of citizens’ advisory committees.

“I think it’s good to increase citizen participation in government,” he said. He added that during his campaign last fall, he found that many residents wanted to have more voice in city government.

“This new committee will encompass the Neighborhood Watch, which is already existing,” Carroll said. “We’d like to see this committee get into many safety issues, including safety in the parks.”
