Column on Tagger’s Killer Raises Red Flag
Scott Harris’ fact-finding column on the suspicious swagger of William Masters II, the man who killed the graffiti tagger, expressed exactly why a red flag went up in my mind about the case--and about something that could tempt any of us.
If I ever had to kill someone in self-defense, I hope I would at least be sobered by the act. I certainly hope I would not be intoxicated by it. And even if I were--say I felt “empowered” or ego-stroked by the public exposure--I hope I would keep it to myself. And what is there to brag about? A gun makes killing easy. And a cause makes it even easier--even probable.
Meanwhile, Masters reserves the “right” to keep carrying his gun illegally, and the district attorney is not touching him.
What’s the message? “Go ahead, make your day?”
We can make appeals to each other’s weaknesses or strengths. I applaud Scott Harris for consistently choosing the latter.
