WESTMINSTER : District OKs Sale of School to Developer

The governing board of the Westminster School District has approved the sale of Gill School to Newport Beach-based Presley Cos.

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the sale without comment at its regular meeting last week.

Plans call for Presley to purchase the 10-acre parcel for $5.7 million. The developer will then build 58 detached single-family homes on the site.

The sale will help fund facilities projects districtwide, including purchasing portable classrooms for Frank N. Eastwood Elementary School, adding sprinklers to some athletic fields, repaving parking lots and playgrounds, and fixing roofs at campuses, officials said.

Last April, the board agreed to sell the site, at 15252 Victoria Lane in Huntington Beach, to the Newport Beach-based development firm of Kaufman & Broad. However, the firm later declined to exercise its option on the property, leaving the district to find a new buyer, district spokeswoman Audrey Brown said.

Gill School was closed in 1976 and was designated as excess property in 1993. At that time, residents urged the board to reject any development plan that would include high-density housing in the area.

On Thursday, trustees reaffirmed that pledge and said that Presley Cos. would abide by the same agreements Kaufman & Broad signed, such as improving a nearby park.
