Hoag Memorial Named One of Nation’s Top 100 Hospitals

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has been named one of the nation’s top 100 hospitals for cost-efficient, quality care in a national survey.

The 416-bed hospital in Newport Beach was the only hospital in Orange County selected in the survey conducted by two health consulting agencies, and was one of only two in its category: non-teaching hospitals with more than 250 beds.

“The top 100 hospitals demonstrate that it is possible to reduce death rates and complications while charging payers less and operating at a lower cost,” said Jean Chenoweth, vice president of HCIA Inc. of Baltimore, which conducted the study with Mercer Management Consulting of New York.

“If all hospitals performed at the level of benchmark hospitals such as Hoag Hospital, the study shows that industrywide charges would decline $43 billion,” Chenoweth added.

Hoag was cited for having low patient death rates. Patients were charged less and had shorter stays than at other hospitals nationwide. Yet the hospital was able to fill more of its beds, making it more efficient.
