SIMI VALLEY : Council to Postpone Vote on Cable Rates

Allowing for another week of negotiations, the Simi Valley City Council will postpone until March 6 a vote on whether to change rates charged by Comcast Cable.

Two weeks ago, the City Council voted--despite objections from Comcast--to lower cable rates and force the company to pay refunds for alleged overcharges. But council members, who had to vote by that time because of a federal deadline, immediately decided to allow the city and the cable-television firm to continue negotiations.

Since then, officials from Comcast and the city have been negotiating a new rate structure to avoid a costly appeal of the rates voted on by the council.

The council will delay taking up the issue Monday night to give the two sides more time to work out their differences, said Joe Hreha, who oversees the utility for the city.

Hreha said the company has had to send officials from its Philadelphia office to negotiate the new rates.

The two sides are close to a compromise, he added.
