DAVID LANCE GOINES POSTERS: 1970-1994 by David Lance Goines (Ten Speed Press: $19.95; 144 pp., paperback original). Although he won an American Book Award for “A Constructed Roman Alphabet,” graphic artist David Goines is best known for his posters, wine labels and Chez Panisse advertisements. His understated style reflects an eclectic range of influences, from the Art Nouveau designs of Charles Rennie MacIntosh to the illuminations in “The Book of Kells.” Goines modestly compares his work to a pair of blue jeans: “They’re meant for everyday use. If they get dirty it’s okay; the dirt probably won’t show anyhow. . . The older they get, the more comfortable they get.”
