Dam Building May Halt

LISBON —
The U.N. cultural body UNESCO is asking Portugal to suspend the building of a dam that would submerge a remote valley containing hundreds, perhaps thousands, of prehistoric rock carvings.
The engravings came to the attention of scientists when the state utility company asked an archeologist to research the valley.
Secretary of State for Culture Manuel Frexes said the government will make a decision on the matter within three months.
