SHAKY BIZ: Talk about your fixer-uppers. . . . Quake-wracked homes are piling up profits for savvy Valley realtors. The demand has created a fringe market of “as-is” homes, where spider web cracks spell opportunity instead of headaches. “It used to be even if a property was cleaned up, you were lucky to sell it,” said one realtor. “Now the messier the better.” See Valley Business, Page 10.

LOVE HURTS: Ladies will soon have little to fear from Vernon Pierce. . . . The 33-year-old Glendale resident, who allegedly had four wives, has pleaded guilty to a count of bigamy in an Arizona court and will be sentenced April 3. He faces anywhere from six months in jail to 2 1/2 years in prison. . . . But did he love all his wives? “One person can’t be in love with that many people,” he says. “That’s impossible.”

MAYOR SAM: Former Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty, above, always was outspoken. In a rare appearance Monday night in Van Nuys, Yorty, now 85, expressed sympathy for the LAPD officers convicted in the Rodney King beating. And he criticized the hiring of Chief Willie Williams, who came from Philadelphia. “I don’t mind him being black . . . but I just mind him being brought in from outside,” Yorty said. (B1)

MAGIC TOUCH: There’s nothing calm before this storm. . . . Although L.A. County tourism has slipped, construction crews are working at full steam to deliver a summer opening of Magic Mountain’s newest and boldest endeavor, a themed water park called Hurricane Harbor. Six Flags officials say they’re spending $35 million on the project. See Valley Business, Page 3.

CSUN VOTE: Speaking of gambles. . . . Cal State Northridge students today will vote on whether to raise semester fees by $27 to save the school’s deficit-strapped athletic program (C7). Coaches know this is no easy win: Students voted down two similar fee increases in 1994.
