World IN BRIEF : INDIA : Election Violence Claims at Least 10

An official whose jeep hit a land mine was among 10 people killed as one of India’s most violence-racked states held an election under heavy police and army guard. Elections in Bihar state were delayed for a week while the government sent in 52,000 police and soldiers, but few were posted in the villages where violence broke out. Preliminary results from states that voted last week indicated a setback for the party of Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
