LOS ANGELES : Archdiocese Plans to Consolidate 4 High Schools

In a move aimed at bolstering parochial school enrollment, officials of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles have announced plans to consolidate four of their secondary schools.
Officials announced the opening of two all-girls’ campuses in the Southeast area, one at the site of Pius X High School in Downey and another at the site of Regina Caeli school in Compton.
Beginning in September, students attending St. Mathias, an all-girls’ school in Huntington Park, will be moved to Pius X, a coeducational campus, said Jerome Porath, schools superintendent for the archdiocese. Boys attending Pius X will remain until they graduate, but the school will ultimately become an all-girls’ campus.
At the same time, students at St. Michael’s school in South-Central will attend Regina Caeli in Compton. Both schools currently house female students.
Plans are to rename Pius X and Regina Caeli. The archdiocese has not decided what to do with the old campuses, Porath said. Church officials, who announced the consolidation Thursday, said a recent survey indicated that parents want more single-gender schools. There are 26 high schools run by the archdiocese, and all have faced a steady decline in enrollment in recent years, Porath said.
