Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Hospital Is Short on Medical Supplies
The District of Columbia’s financial woes are being felt in its only public hospital, which is facing shortages of basic medical supplies. D.C. General Hospital has found itself either low on or out of high blood pressure medications, gauze bandages, AIDS testing materials and rubber gloves. The shortages have forced doctors to beg or scrounge up supplies and equipment from other hospitals. Mayor Marion Barry has ordered the debt-ridden hospital, which is preparing to send layoff notices to 260 workers, to work within its means.
