Roberts Holds On, Wins at Orlando

Loren Roberts bogeyed the final two holes but beat golf’s strongest field of the year Sunday, shooting a one-under-par 71 to win the Nestle Invitational at Orlando, Fla., for the second year in a row. Roberts finished with a 272 total, 16-under and two shots ahead of a field that included the winners of all four majors in 1994 and the top 24 players in the world. Brad Faxon was second with 274.

Laura Davies blew all but one shot of a four-shot lead in beating Beth Daniel for her second consecutive LPGA Standard Register-Ping championship with a 12-under 280 at Phoenix.

Tennis

Pete Sampras made short work of Derrick Rostagno, 6-3, 6-2, and Andre Agassi beat Shuzo Matsuoka, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round of the Lipton Championships at Key Biscayne, Fla. Richard Krajicek was eliminated, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, by Paul Kilderry, an Australian qualifier ranked No. 194. Stefan Edberg lost to German Karsten Braasch, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1). Michael Chang trounced Jim Grabb, 6-0, 6-3.

On the women’s side, Steffi Graf defeated Maureen Drake, 6-1, 6-2; Lindsay Davenport beat Yayuki Basuki, 6-4, 6-3, and Gabriela Sabatini beat Irina Spirlea, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Yevgeny Kafelnikov defeated Guillame Raux, 6-2, 6-2, to win the St. Petersburg Open in Russia.

Winter Sports

Vreni Schneider clinched her third World Cup overall title, winning the women’s slalom in 1 minute 31.69 seconds while German rival Katja Seizinger finished 14th in the World Cup Championships in Bormio, Italy. In the men’s slalom, Ole Christian Furuseth was the winner in 1:40.99. . . . Kjell Ove Oftedal anchored Norway, which held off France by four seconds to win the men’s final World Cup biathlon relay in 1:30:54.4 at Lillehammer. . . . Chae Ji-Hoon won the 3,000 meters in 4:56.29 in the World Short Track Speedskating Championships in Gjovik, Norway. . . . Sweden’s Camilla Lundback won her second consecutive U.S. Women’s Pro Ski Tour title in Locke Mills, Maine.
