AGRA : Two for the Taj Mahal
It was one of the magic moments of Camelot: Jacqueline Kennedy posing for the photographers in front of the world’s most celebrated monument to love, India’s Taj Mahal.
Thursday, the current First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and her daughter, Chelsea, will make the same visit as they continue a 12-day trip across the subcontinent.
But Mrs. Clinton’s travels have a different theme than the photogenic goodwill tour that Mrs. Kennedy made. In Agra, she will visit the headquarters of the Self-Employed Women’s Assn., whose founder, Ela Bhatt, has organized thousands of illiterate women vegetable vendors, quilt makers and trash pickers into powerful trade unions.
